Rizal at University of Santo Tomas
Rizal first enrolled in UST to take Philosophy and Letters in 1877. At the same time, he took a vocational course at Ateneo which was a land-surveyor and got an assessor’s degree.

After a year in UST, he changed courses and transferred to Medicine to alleviate the declining eyesight of his mother. He nonetheless stopped attending UST due to the discrimination of Filipino students by the Dominican Professors.

March 23, 1877Rizal received the Bachelor of Arts degree, graduating as one of the nine students in his class declared “sobresaliente” or outstanding.
