In the 20th century the great houses were managed by a large number of people, servants organised in a strict hierarchy.
SERVANTS HIERARCHY
The Butler
He's the head of the male staff.Known as Mr+surname.

- has to keep the keys of the cellar and the silverware
- has to direct the staff during the parties
- has to know all about the Galateo
- has to manage all the staff by selecting, hiring, firing and more.
The Housekeeper
She's the head of the female staff. Know as Mrs+surname

- has to keep the keys of all the rooms
- has to manage the supplies and the shopping in general
- has to manage the female staff
Lady's maid
She's the personal maid of the lady. Know as Mrs+surname.

- has to get her lady dressed
- has to check and clean her lady's clothes and shoes
- has to style her lady's hair
- has to be very decent because she's her lady's person of trust
The Valet
He's the personal man of the lord of the house

The Cook
Know as Mrs/Mr+surname She/he is the head of the kitchen

- has to write down the shopping list
- has to manage the suppliers
The Footman
His name comes from the ancient tradition to go on foot before the lord's carriage to ensure about the safety of the road.

- has to wait tables
- has to stand guard
- has to throw out the annoying guests

She is the cleaner of the house
