What is Noting Details?
Focused and sustained reading and rereading of a text with the purpose of understanding key points, gathering evidence and developing knowledge.
What do we do when we noting details?
We do an intensive analysis of a text in order to come to terms with what it says, how it says it, and what it means.
How to write Noting Details effectively?
Read with a pencil in hand – annotate the text!
Look for patterns in the things you’ve noticed about the text – repetitions, contradictions, similarities: This is what the teacher wants students to look for: key ideas and details, central message or theme, character traits, etc.
Ask questions about the patterns you’ve noticed – especially how and why.
Examples: Gives specific information about the main idea.
Categories of Noting details...
Facts Statements that can be proven.
Statistics: Numbers used to give additional information.
Reasons: Explanations that tell why something happened.
Definitions: Statements that explain what something means; often come from the dictionary.
Descriptions: Words or phrases that tell how something looks, smells, tastes, sounds or feels; help readers get a mental picture of what they are reading.
The meaning of the strategy. (A creative READING ENVIRONMENT.
Key Ideas and Details:Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate
understanding of key details in a text .
Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text .
Determine the meaning of words and phrases in text relevant.
Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe .
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.
