José Sánchez del río was born on March 28, 1913 in Sahuayo, in the State of Michoacán.

José was a child who from a very young age knew poverty and work.

José was a very happy and mischievous boy.

When the so-called "Cristero War" broke out in 1926, his brothers joined the rebel forces.

In Sahuayo Catholicism was very active and for this reason the movement of the "Cristeros" was deeply rooted.

The priests who lived clandestinely stayed in Sahuayo throughout the persecution.

José decided to join the Cristeros but his mother objected because of his age.

Enemy ammunition killed General Cristero's horse so Jose gave his horse even if he was captured.

They made the proposal to him to flee to avoid the death sentence, but he refused.

They forced him to walk barefoot to the cemetery.

Placed before the grave where he would be buried, they stabbed him without killing him.

Finally, he was executed with a gunshot.

He was almost 15 years old. Three days before he had written to his mother: «Resign yourself to the will of God. I die happy because I die next to Our Lord .

Without a coffin and without a shroud, he received the shovels of earth directly and his body was buried.

On November 20, 2005, he was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI and, on October 16, 2016, canonized by Pope Francis.
