Top 10 sports moments of the 20th century

By: Shamara Murphy

1900-1909: jack johnson becomes the first african american heavyweight champion

I believe this is the most important event in this decade because racism, descrimination and inequality is so huge during this time, and a black male becoming the first ever to be heavyweight champion is a big turn for for america. I also believe that this gave other african american people motivation and showed them that they can be great and do great things even during the time they lived in.

1910-1919:The first Indianapolis 500

This is the most important event of the decade because it was the start to a very popular sport. At first obviously the cars and the track were not what you think when talking about a race cars, but over time the sport continued to evolve.

1920-1929the first negro league was founded by Rube Foster

This is the most important event during this time because black people faced so many hardships due to racism and this is another big step forward for them. I think this is very important.

1930-1939:Knute Rockne dies in plane crash

This was a very sad moment in this time and in history of football, and I believe it was very important at this time. It also forced the development of safer planes, leading to an expansion of the worldwide passenger airline industry

1940-1949:Jackie Robinson breaks the color barrier

This is another important event because of the time it happened there was a lot of racial tension and issues. This was a turning point not only for the black community but America also. I feel as if this event gave black people hope that they can achieve anything and not be left in the dirt forever.

1950-1959: NFL championship, "The Greatest game ever played" and the birth of modern NFL

This was a very important event in the 50s because this game is what helped create the modern day NFL. Without this game, who knows how things would have went?

1960-1969:Muhammad Ali refuses entry into draft, stripped of his heavyweight title

Boxer Muhammad Ali refused to be drafted into the U.S. Army and he was stripped of his heavyweight title. This is significant because it had to have been hard for him along with his fans to see his title being taken away from him, all because he wouldnt join the army for religious reasons.

1970-1979:Marshall Plane Crash

This is an absolutely tragic event to happen. The marshall plane crash is very important in this time because it not only killed all the football players on the plane, but coaches, trainers, athletic directors, 25 boosters, and a crew of five. This was a very sad day and time for football and America.

1980-1989:Michael Jordan "The Shot"

Michael Jordan had the game winning shot against the Cleveland Cavaliers in a play off game. This is significant because Michael Jordan is such an influential person to his fans and this was a great day for all of them and a great series for Michael.

1990-1999:Tiger Woods becomes the youngest masters champion ever.

This is a great accomplishment by tiger woods for making history in golf at 21 years young.
