A RARE yet serious condition commonly affecting females throughout pregnancy, childbirth or most commonly postpartum.

WHAT IS IT?

To prepare for a safe child birth your body produces a hormone throughout pregnancy named RELAXIN. This helps by expanding the birth canal by softening the cartilaginous joint and ligaments.

Normally the pubic symphysis allows ~0.5-1mm of movement, though during pregnancy it can increase by 2-3mm (Norvilaite et al., 2020). Pubic symphysis diastasis (PSD) occurs when the pubic symphsis seperates more than 1cm.

  • Pubic joint or groin pain
  • Inflammation
  • Radiating pain into your abdominals and legs
  • Difficulty weight bearing or lifting
  • Traumatic child birth; rapid or prolonged contractions during labour, shoulder dystocia, etc
  • Previous pregnancies
  • Fetal macrosomia
  • Narrow pelvic outlet
  • Epidural route of anaesthesia
  • Previous pelvic trauma
  • Osteomalacia
  • Chondromalacia
  • Infections

  • Analgesics (NSAIDS)
  • Pelvic binder

If the pubis symphysis gap is over 4cm or is unresolved and worsened with conservative treatment referral to an orthopaeidic surgeon is required.
