Cambodian Genocide (1975-1979)
Years before the genocide began, Cambodia was engaged in a civil war. The Cambodian monarchy promoted strong nationalism, but was seen as corrupt and ineffectual. The strong division of class made the country susceptible to revolution.

Legal procedures
Nuon Chea: In 2014 received a life sentence for crimes against humanity, and a further trial convicted him of genocide in 2018. He died while serving his sentence in 2019.
Pol Pot's health was declining. He was under house arrest. After, he was sentenced to life by the Khmer Rouge. On April 15, 1998, he died in his sleep of heart failure.
Kang Kek Iew "Dutch": first leader to be tried by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia. Convicted to 30 then to life imprisonment.
