Homographs

Changing word stress

What's an homograph? Can you think of some examples?

Homographs are words that you spell the same, but that change meaning depending on the sentence. Additionally, in these examples, they also change word stress depending on their grammatical category.

Examples:

Conflict noun = controversy verb = to clash Content noun = subject matter verb= to satisfy

where do you stress nouns? where do you stress verbs?

Practice categorizing these homographs according to their word stress

Practice these sentences, change the word stress according to the word's category.

But!

What if the word has more than two syllables?

For example:graduate Noun and adjective = /ˈgrædʒuət/ Verb = /ˈgrædʒueɪt/ Where is the stress in nouns and adjectives? Where is it in verbs? How did the suffix -ate change?

Use the transcription to see the word stress and suffix and decide each word's grammatical category.

Practice a bit more!

Good Job!
