dublin 1854 - paris 1900

He studied at Oxford and became a disciple of the theory of aestheticism: a search for beauty, a science through which men looked for the relationship between painting, sculpture and poetry, which were simply different forms of the same truth.

Oscar left Oxford and went to London where he married Constance Lloyd in 1883, who gave him two children, but soon tired of his marriage; in fact in 1891 he met the young Lord Alfred Douglas who became his lover.

He was arrested for his homosexuality and put in prison. He died of meningitis in Paris where he lived under a false name and in poverty in 1900.

what's the book about?

THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY

“The picture of Dorian Gray” tells the story of Dorian, a handsome young man who is retracted by a famous painter Basil Hallward attracted by his beauty. When Dorian sees his picture he’s impressed by the perfection of his beauty and so he expresses the desire to remain young forever.

Meanwhile he lives an immoral life and all the signs of his immorality appeared on the painting which is kept hidden in a room; when he sees that his painter became horrible and transfigured, he killed the author of the picture and he tries to destroy the painting . But he died mysteriously and the painter return to his original perfection and all the signs appeared on Dorian’s body.

IN MY VIEW...

I read this book in the original language last summer and it really fascinated me. The twisted story is perfectly told through the use of so many adjectives and descriptions, it makes you feel like you're inside the book or as a viewer at the cinema or theatre. In such an ancient and complex tale it is difficult to take the side of a single character,or to prefer one over the others, but on the contrary it is possible to keep your eyes fixed on the pages and continue to leaf through them with disarming facility without thinking about the heaviness of the story itself. It seems impossible to comment negatively on this book, after all who am I to comment on oscar wilde?

OUR EXPERIENCE

From school to theatre

PHRASES

Our class was supposed to see a show about this fascinating story, but since we are experiencing a global pandemic and the theatres have been closed, we followed the scenes through a computer!

Poor? What does poverty mean when you have love? When poverty creeps in at the door, love flies in through the window.

I'm amaze by your beautiful

I loved this show and the phrases I wrote down during the viewing are many, it is difficult to choose just a few. many speak of the concept of love, of art, of beauty, treated as if they were pure, raw things; others suggest the feelings they speak of, as if they were touchable even though they were in fact abstract.

Love is much more beautiful than art

“I libri che gli uomini chiamano 'immorali' sono semplicemente libri che mostrano al mondo la sua vergogna.”
