Escape games are a great tool to gamify your classroom. You can tailor them to your needs by creating your adventures for any levels or subjects! In this workshop, you will learn how to create an online escape game using the platform Genially by discovering these four core elements: Story, Clues, Codes and Activities.

What is an escape game?

  • An Immersive adventure !
  • Can also be called an escape room
  • Can be physical, a board game, or virtual
  • Typically the goal is to literally escape a room by finding clues, solving codes and completing challenges
  • The goal can also be to complete a mission
  • Typically escape games have a time limit
  • Typically escape games are played in teams
  • Tailored for your students
  • Can be a team building activity
  • Increase student engagement
  • Make the content of the lesson memorable
  • Self paced work, students direct their learning
  • It's fun !

  • Choose your theme (ex: Pirate ship, locked in a school, someone stole your neighbour's book...).
  • Choose the name of your game.
  • Write your introduction.
  • Link your pages.

Make sure there are no transitions activated

Additional resources

If there is no more text in the textbox, it will dissapear.

Copying the text and copying the box will have different results.

Test all the passways in your game to make sure your students won't get stuck.

Make sure there are no transition activated for your slides if you are making an escape game (little magic wand in your "pages" tool).

Remember you can add slides from other templates. For example if there is an code or activity you like in one template, you can download it into your creation.

If you create buttons, group all your components together. If not, it will be frustrating for the players.

Look for "reusable" genial.ly templates created by the community and download them to your account to use them. Don't forget to acknowledge the creator !
