HANDLING SOLID WASTE

How can we avoid contamination?

Ecuador generates 4.06 million tons of rubbish every year. How much will be generated in 5 years? Where do the rubbish trucks deposit all this rubbish? Many people also throw away old furniture on wasteland or in valleys, rivers and lakes. They are polluting the land and the water. Rubbish is also burnt which pollutes the air with carbondioxide and increases the greenhouse effect

DEGRADABILITY OF WASTE

DANGEROUS WASTE

CLASSIFICATION

This is waste that contaminates or causes damage to people. For example, syringes, medications, oils, car batteries, paint cans etc. This type of waste needs special treatment because it is highly contaminating

This is the capacity of decomposition through the action of decomposing microorganisms. ORGANIC WASTE decomposes in 3 weeks - 4 months. METAL WASTE can take up to 500 years

Solid waste can be classified into; DEGRADABLE HARMFUL TO HEALTH

TECHNIQUES FOR HANDLING WASTE

COMPOSTING ORGANIC WASTE

Organic waste such as leftovers from fruit, plants, vegetables, bones paper and other similar things can be left in a hole in the ground to decompose. This will produce a rich mixture of nutrients to enrich the soil

RECYCLING

You can recycle waste such as plastics, wood and glass. You can also reuse these products to reduce the waste you produce. Reusing plastics and glass is a great way to reduce rubbish and it also helps to save money.

LANDFILL DUMPS

Lanfills must be specially designed in order to control leakage of toxins. When different types of waste are mixed together, a contaminating mixture is created. Landills also create and leak methane. A lanfill must have a methane gas output control and must be located far away from public areas

How Does a Modern Landfill Work?

MECHANICAL BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT ( MBT)

An alternative technique for handling solid waste is MECHANICAL BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT (MBT). Once waste arrives at the plant, it is combined through mechanical and biological treatment. This tecnique reduces the production of pollutants affecting the air and the soil.
