JOHAL

ਜੱਟ ਸਿੱਖ

ORIGIN

The Johal family name originated from the White Huns tribe called Johl. The Johl tribe from Central Asia came to India and absorbed into the Jats, which is our caste. Thus the existence of the Johal last name is due to the Johl tribe of White Huns that managed to stay in North-Western India and merged with the Jats(Jatland).

After they immigarted to Candada, my uncles and aunts came as well. This is when the Johal family began to grow in Canada.

Sukhwinder and Kulvir Johal immigrated to Canada in 1996. They were the first to bring their Johal name to Canada.

FUN FACT: This is a soldier from the Jat reigiment. My great grandfather and great-great grandfather both were enlisted in the Jat reigiment. They fought many wars including WWI("Jat Regiment).

HAPLOGROUP

FUN FACT: My grand parents own 25 acres of land back in Punjab. This land has been passed down for generations!!!11

The Jats' genetic origins can be traced back to at least nine, if not more, haplogroups, with nine distinct geographical origins separated by thousands of miles. The haplogroups that I may belong to are E, G, H, I, J, L, Q, R and T(Mahal and Matsoukas 6). This can be seen in the chart on the right. These are my Y-DNA haplogroups.

Johal family haplogroup is Q which has the marker M242. We can see the many other haplogroups of Jats who have different last names. But the origin of the Johal last name comes from group Q with the origin location of Central Asia.

Immigrated to Canada in 1996 from Punjab, India

We can see the migration of the mitochondrial DNA put of Africa and in to other countries. (James et al. 540)

Immigrated to Canada in 1999 from Punjab, India and started own families

There are nine distinct lines of Jat ancestry and regional roots. Despite their distinct languages, beliefs, nationalities, traditions, cuisines, and physical differences, the Jats shared their haplogroups with many other ethnic groups on the Indian subcontinent, and had the same common ancestors and geographic roots in the distant past. The influx of Ancestral South Indians into Central Asia with the Ancestral North Indians triggered a genetic drift that can be seen in the genetic landscape of Central Asia. As a result, these two distinct groups were admixed. This is what explains the many different lines of ancestry and geographic origins as they began to move out of Central Asia and into Africa, Middle East, Syria etc(Mahal and Matsoukas 6).

HEALTH & IMPLICATIONS

RISK FACTORS Diet Inactivty

The issue that is prevalent within my family and the South Asian community is type 2 diabetes. The incidence of type 2 in South Asians is far more greater than the incidence in Caucasians. In comparison to 2-5% of Caucasians, 15-20% of South Asians will develop diabetes(Janjua and Mitra 20). My grandparents on both sides have developed type 2 diabetes and it really has taken a toll on their mental health. The increased urination, increased thirst and increased hunger really takes a toll on them as they constantly have to either drink or eat or go to the bathroom. This is why I have chosen to talk about the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in my family and the South Asian community. There are many environmental factors that lead to the development of diabetes but there may be some biological/genetic factors as well. But these need to be researched upon more. The implications of this is that South Asians may develop a high mortality rate. And children may look at their parents and deem that fatty foods and not excersing is normal. So South Asians need to prevent type 2 diabetes by keeping a healthy diet and exercising.

In this bar graph we can see that the prevelance is highest for individuals from India. This is where my family is from. But the rates are still high from the other South Asian countries(Gyawali 2).

BE CAREFUL OF THESE RISK FACTORS. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD DIET WITH LOTS OF FIBERS. AND YOU ARE ACTIVE. THIS WILL DECREASE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING TYPE 2 DIABETES.

After reading this infographic I want the reader to know about this big issue within my family and the South Asian community. I am hoping that South Asians research a bit more about type 2 diabetes within our community. I want them to look around in their own families or even at themself and see if they are able to prevent diabetes. If one requires help or education about type 2 diabetes, they should visit the Canadian diabetes prevention website. This website will provide them with seminars, brochures and answer any questions one may have about diabetes. They also provide support and help people who are on the verge of getting diabetes. They have a prevention program which is of no cost and should be looked into by every South Asian who is worried about getting type 2 diabetes.
