We use the reported speech when we want to repeat what someone has said previously.

The most used reported verbs are TELL and SAY. However, there are other verbs that tell us more accurately the intentions of the speaker.

To report direct speech, we change the verb tenses from the present to the past.Present simple --> Past simple Present continuous --> Past continuous Present perfect --> Past perfect

The other day I saw Lucy and Mark. Lucy said that that day was a fantastic day because they could finally go outside. Mark agreed and added that he had waited for that day for a long time.

When the main verb is in a past tense, we change it to the past perfect.Past simple --> Past Perfect SimplePast continuous --> Past Perfect Continuous Past perfect --> Past perfect

Finally, if the speaker was talking in future will, the reported speech will be with would.Future will --> would Be going to --> was/were be going to

How to change a sentence from direct speech to reported speech

Change the tense of the verb to the correct tense. If there is anything else we need to change (time expressions, pronouns) we also do it.
Use the correct reporting verb.
Identify who is talking. This person will be the subject of our reported speech sentence.
Mary: I can't believe it is Tuesday

When we report a question, we change the word order so that it reflects the structure of an affirmative sentence. We don’t use the auxiliary do / did in reported questions.We also change tenses and references to times, places and people in the same way as in statements.
