The American political system is a constitutional democracy. Under the Constitution the federal government has three branches/arms: 1.Legislative Branch: House of Representatives and Senate 2.Executive Branch: President, Cabinet, Federal Departments and Agencies 3.Judicial Branch: Supreme Court, Other Federal Courts

Constitution

America declared its independence from Britain in 1776. (Declaration of Independence) Eleven years later, the separate states joined together to form the United States. At Philadelphia in 1787, a convention attended by the most important men of the day produced a constitution. The Constitution came into force in 1789. The US has a written constitution

president

The president's main function is to enforce the law, by running the federal government. He also proposes laws and the annual budget to Congress, is commander-in-chief of the US armed forces, and is broadly responsible for foreign policy. The president is elected every four years, but cannot serve more than two terms. A US president must be 35 or older, a US citizen born in the USA and have lived in the USA at least 14 years.

Congress

The Congress is responsible for passing laws and the budget. It has two chambers - the Senate and the House of Representatives. A senator must be 30 years old, 9 years a citizen and an inhabitant of the state, which elects him. A representative must be 25, a US citizen and live in the state from which he is elected.

Jordan Smith is a 24 years old woman who has been living in New York city since her birth. She would like to be a representative of New York State. Samanta Perkins was born in Montreal, Canada. At the age of two her family moved to the USA. Since then she has been living in Washington D.C. She is 36 years old and she wants to be the first female president of the USA. Ken Adams was born in Philadelphia in 1979. At the age of 10 his family moved to Italy. In 2016 he got married and decided to move home to the States. He wants to follow Joe Biden as president.
