Design Thinking and Liberatory Design
What is Design Thinking and Liberatory Design
Liberatory Design is simular to Design Thinking but, your aware of Oppesion Issues
We Designed with an Equity based mindset

What Does it Mean to Be a Culturally Responsive Educator?
Culturally Responsive Educator
- Aware of Student Backgrounds
- Learning about Cultures
- Integrating Cultures
- Open Communication
Notice Phase
Notice Phase
When one person is practicing self awareness within their own:
- Values - Morals -Beleifs -Identity -Culture -Biases
I reflected on my own experiences by looking at what I know and if I know enough to be an "expert"
Empathy Work
Why are student's struggling?
Why is the school system failing students?
Why is the drop out rate so high?
How do teachers support their students?
- We interviewed a student named Manuel from Spain
- Manuel discussed how Spain had a large dropout rate
- Manuel had a hard time understanding why their dropout rate was so high
- We used the 7 different phases in Liberatory design to help Manuel
See the System
What is See the System?
Looking at what's going on within the educational system
Looking at how to resolve the issues within the educational system
"Student's don't have the motivation to complete their schoolwork or strong work ethic" - Manuel
What I learned about Spain
1 in 3
children are reported to live in poverty locations or "at risk"
25%
in 2014 25% of those children who live in those conditions will drop out of school
Spain's tuition for University has increased over 50% over the years
Student's have a hard time continuing education
Drop Outs
2019 Early leavers from education
(2019, % of those lower secondary education. From Eurostat) United States 5% from 2018
Poland 5%
Ireland 5.2%
Germany 10%
Spain 17.3%
Greece 4.3%
Define Phase
What is the define phase?
Coming up with a clear idea on the problem or situation that is trying to be solved
What did we use to determine the user's need?
- looked at their interests - whats going on in Spain's education - focused on helping Manuel understand the dropout rates
Ideate Phase
What is ideation?
To come up with a creative solution for the problem
There are many solutions
How did we come up with an idea to explore?
by talking to Manuel we learned that he learns better by watching documentaries
we decided to create a video to help educate Manuel on Spain's dropout rate
Prototype
What is a prototype?
A visual representation of the idea that you have gathered
Our prototype we did was a case study on 3 individuals in Spain
Sharing prototype with user
Created a powerpoint presentation that we were able to share
Unfortunately our user was unable to make it to the presentation
Test Phase
What is the Test Phase?
When you take all of the information you have gathered and you assess the information with an audiance
Provides learning opportunity to help the user
How would you test it?
Would they see that the dropout rate isn't as high as they originally thought?
Share the information gathered from Manuel and other students from spain to see how they would react
17.3%

Cullturally responsive teaching is very important aspect of this process
Important to learn about student's culture
The way the student acts could be a result in their culture
