WHY IS WATER CALLED THE UNIVERSAL SOLVENT?
Water exists in liquid, solid, and gaseous states. It is in dynamic equilibrium between the liquid and gas at standard temperature and pressure. Many substances dissolve in water and it is commonly referred to as the universal solvent. Water in nature and in use is rarely pure and some properties may vary from those of the pure substances.
01
02
POLARITY
Water is polar molecule, meaning other molecules can bond to it. This happens because of the uneven distribution of electrons between oxygen and hydrogen atoms.
COHESION & ADHESION
Because water is polar, it can hold its shape. That is cohesion, the attraction to other water molecules. Adhesion is water attracted to other substances

SOLUTIONS
Water is present in all 3 states of matter. It can be solid as ice, liquid as water, and gas as water vapor. It changes its stage of matter at 100 degrees Celcius to boil and 0 degrees Celcius to freeze.
in a solution, components are evenly distributed. In salt water, salt is the solute. The substance that is dissolved.
06
SURFACE TENSION
05
Due to polarity, water creates a thin layer where small substances can float on, like the needle in the experiment.
ph SCALE
pH scale indicates the concentration of ions in a solution. Acidic solutions contain higher concentration and basic or Alkaline solution contains lower concentration.
