ABOUT
Cement Stabilized Interlocking Blocks
Some Facts :
Interlocking bricks are the enhanced form of conventional clay bricks. Each brick is constructively designed to lock itself to the other bricks around without the use of mortar. The self locking is achieved using shear-key and lock mechanism.
- Also known as Compressed and Stabilized Earth bricks (CSEB)
- They are usually not subjected to baking.
- Interlocking bricks come in various sizes and locking systems.
Preparation
Materials Required
Processes Involved
The materials required in construction of interlocking blocks :
The processes involved in construction of interlocking blocks :
- Proportioning
- Mixing
- Soil block pressing
- Curing
- OPC Cement
- Sand
- Crushed stone dust
- Stone aggregate
- Water
- Sifted soil (Laterite)
Proportioning
Definition
Proportioning is the process of selecting quantity of cement, sand, coarse aggregate and water to obtain desired strength and quality.
Info
MIXING
Definition
Mixing is simply defined as the complete blending of the materials which are required for the production of a homogeneous mixture for preparing interlocking blocks. This can be done manually mixing or using machine mixing, with machine mixing being the most common.
Info
Soil block pressing
Defintion
Once the mixture is ready it is poured into a soil block press machine (as shown in the figure) and the interlocking block of desirable size and interlocking pattern is made.
Curing
Definition
Curing is the maintaining of adequate moisture content and temperature in blocks at an early age so that it could develop properties the mixture was designed to achieve. Curing begins immediately after finishing and placement so that the blocks can develop the desired durability and strength.
Info
Interlocks in cseb
One of the main advantages of soil cement blocks over traditional bricks is that they can be made in such a way as to interlock with each other. There are many ways in whichthis can be achieved :
- Straight Double interlocking block
- Curved Double Interlocking Block
- Wide Format Interlocking Block
- Straight Single Interlocking Block
- Grooved Double Interlocking Block
Brickwork
About
Types
There are four main ways to use bricks and blocks to make walls. Each method has its environmental and economic merits and it is important to understand the reasons for choosing any given method in building your home. It is quite feasible to use each method in the same home but generally more economical, logistically sound and environmentally effective to use just one or two.
- Brick veneer — A commonly used approach in which bricks form the external skin of a timber framed home
- Reverse brick veneer — Bricks form the internal skin of an insulated, framed home
- Double brick — Consists of two leaves of brickwork with a cavity
- Solid brick — A high thermal mass construction mostly used for internal walls

transportation
About
The transportation to the construction site is an important factor to consider, since a good packaging of the interlocking bricks/blocks in the vehicle is required. So that there is not excessive number of units broken in the route. There are several methods, however here we will illustrate the most used methods that have obtained the best results :
- Loading bricks with forklift
- Loading bricks with hoist
- Manual upload
storage
About
GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW WHILE STORING BLOCKS ON SITE:
- Store the blocks close to the site of work so that least effort is required for their transportation.
- Unload one block at a time and stack it in regular tiers to minimize breakage and defacement.
- The height of the stack should not be more than 1.2 m and the length of the stack should not be more than 3 m and width of the stack should not be more than 2 to 3 blocks.
Pros
Interlock bricks are the latest advancement of construction. Interlock bricks are used for making houses and they don’t need cement for that. These bricks are locked in each other, reduces the time and cost of making buildings. So here we are going to discuss some advantages of using interlocking blocks :
- Less labour intensive and more time saving.
- The Interlocking blocks can be rescued without harm when the house is being disassembled later on.
- No need of mortar between two layers of bricks.
- These bricks are cost saving as they don’t need cement and sand for construction.
- Being a less warmth serious and normal material, laterite holds coolness inside the house/building.
- Green technology - zero cabon emission
Cons
Some disadvantages of using interlocking blocks are as follows :
- Sometimes they become unstable or starts breaking out. Installation of interlock bricks is multi-layer process so if there is a defect in layer then brick will also damage.
- Since there is no plasterwork provided, rain water might into the lines making it a hostage for insects and other undesired things. Due to the action of weather, disintegration of the bricks might occur.
- Weeds growth is the most important problem of interlock bricks. Due to rains and other things, weeds and grasses grow in interlock bricks.
- Fading of color is also one of the biggest problems of interlock bricks. As they come in use again and again and due to the rain water and moisture or maybe other problems their colors fades away.
famous sites
Bara Imambara (Lucknow)
Easter Islands (Peru)
- It is a historical edifice with such a marvelous architecture that even modern architects seem to be perplexed by its design.
- The roof has been put together with interlocking bricks without using a beam or a girder. Hence, it is viewed as a unique achievement of architecture.
- The site is now Peru's most-visited tourist attraction.
- The entire city is constructed from interlocking walls of smooth, polished stones. Without using mortar, they fit the stones together like an immense jigsaw puzzle.
