SAY THE NUMBER

COMPOUND NUMBERS

COMPOUND NUMBERS

They are numbers made up of two words, and we use a hyphen (-) between each word. This occurs in numbers between twenty-one and ninety-nine.

On the other hand, numbers higher than ninety-nine don't require a hyphen.

HUNDRED, THOUSAND, AND MILLION

-000 = thousand

-00 = hundred

100 = One hundred - A hundred 200 = Two hundred 300 =Three hundred

1,000 = One thousand - A thousand 5,000 = Five thousand 6,000 = Six thousand

-000.000 = million

1.000.000 = One million - A million 8.000.000 = Eight million 9.000.000 = Nine million

'Hundred' is usually followed by 'and'

110 = One hundred and ten - A hundred and ten 5,450 = Five thousand, four hundred and fifty 9.256.300 = 9 million, two hundred and fifty six thousand, three hundred

'Million' never takes an 'S'

SAY THE COMPOUND NUMBER

ORDINAL NUMBERS

We normally add 'th' to the end of a cardinal number to make it an ordinal number, but be careful of the spelling exceptions.

We use ordinal numbers to talk about: 1. Sequence/order: The team is in 3rd place. 2. Dates: my birthday is on the 24th. 3, Centuries: We are in the 21st century. 4. Floors: My bedroom is on the 2nd floor

VIDEO

Let's watch a short video on how to pronounce ‘Th’ a the end of some ordinal numbers.
