Easter in Europe

Click on the country to read about its Easter traditions

UK - egg hunt

On Sunday morning children hunt chocolate eggs, which were hidden by Easter bunny. The egg hunt can take place at home or in the garden.

Denmark - mysterious letters

In Denmark people send letters to their friends and families. But you don't know who is this letter from, because the author writes only dots - one dot is one letter of his/her name. During the Easter meeting you must guess who has sent you the letter.

Sweden - Glad Påsk

In Sweden, at Easter young girls dress up as witches and knock at neighbours' doors, shouting: "Glad Påsk!" (Happy Easter!). In exchange for their wishes, they get sweets and candies.

Germany - decorating trees

Germans love decorating trees! At Christmas they decorate Christmas tree, and at Easter they have something like Easter tree. They hang colourful eggs on trees in their gardens.

Malta - parades and almond bread

In Malta there are many colourful parades with music, which is a very important part of them. On Easter Sunday Maltese people usually don't eat eggs, but sweet almond bread.

The Czech Republic - hitting girls with willow switches

On Easter Monday Czech men hit women lightly with willow stiches. This should give girls youth and health. As a thank-you, men get Easter eggs or something to eat.

Corfu, Greece - throwing clay dishes

In Corfu there is a tradition of throwing clay dishes through the windows and balconies. It's their way of greeting spring, but it symbolises also new crops, which will be harvested and later put into the new dishes.
