BIOGRAPHY

Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on 6th March 1475 in Caprese. He was an Italian Renaissance architect, sculptor and painter. He spent more than 70 years working as an artist between Florence and Rome where the Medici family of Florence and the Roman popes lived. He started sculpting as a child and worked for the Medici family.

Finally, he died the 18th February 1564 in Rome.

He studied in the workshop of the Guirlandaio family, was received in the Palazzo della Via Longa and learned to draw in the Brancacci chapel.

EL DAVIDMichelangelo chose the moment before the fight between David and Goliath to represent repose and tension. He also directs attention to human nature and its virtues.

EL MOISÉSIt is the central figure in the tomb of Pope Julius II and is made of marble. It represents the moment when Moses watches in horror as the Israelites are praying to the golden calf while he is on Mount Sinai carrying the Tablets of the Law.

LA PIEDADThis one is also made of marble and represents the moment when the Virgin Mary receives the body of Jesus and holds it in her arms, just before the so-called lamentation over the dead Christ. Michelangelo made it when he was only 24 years old.

The Final Judgement

It was painted 25 years after the other frescoes had been painted. It was commissioned by Pope Clement VII, succeeded by Pope Paul III, who saw to it that the work was carried out.

Adam's Creation

It represents the moment when the first man is created by God. It is well known because of the hands of God and Adam.

He designed the dome of St. Peter's Basilica because Paul III ordered him to finish the basilica that had been commissioned to Bramante.

MEDICI CHAPELMichelangelo created the New Sacristy of the Church of San Lorenzo and the tombs of the Medici family decorated with sculptures.

ST. LAWRENCE LIBRARY By order of the Medici family, Michelangelo made the library of San Lorenzo, where the private collection of the lords of Florence was kept. It is very famous for its amazing staircases.
