She was born in Belgrade-Serbia, former Yugoslavia on November 30, 1946. Marina is the daughter of the climate left by the postwar period.

Her parents were Yugoslav Partisans during World War II. That's why she grew up with many privileges, like live in a big apartment with her own bedroom and her own painting studio.

She knew from the age of six or seven that she wanted to be an artist. In 1964, she enrolled in the Belgrade Academy of Fine Arts, and did
postgraduate studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Croatia in 1972.
She was interested in exploring her body; take herself towards unknown sensations and limits.
*In her college years, Marina Abramović felt that traditional art and painting were not enough to express her ideas and needs as an artist.
