Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

-Even newer than SSRIs and were first approved in 1993-They specifically prevent the reuptake of both norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain -Much like SSRIs they have some side effects including nausea and fatigue -Are also perscribed first and often like SSRIs and are equally as effective

-A newer class of antidepressants first developed during the 1970s. -Work by preventing the reuptake of neurotransmitters -Tends to have fewer side effects than older antidepressants but still can have some -Is usually effective at moderating the mood and is perscribed first and most often

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors

-An old class of drugs used to treat derpression discovered in the 1950s-Prevents the absorbtion of serotonin and norepinephrine into the nerve cells -Are equally effective as SSRIs but have more side effects including dizziness, low blood pressure and in some cases seizures.

-One of the first classes of antidepressant drugs discovered in the 1950s-Inhibits an enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters leaving more to improve the mood -They are stronger than SSRIs but have more side effects including nausea and insomnia, -It also causes severly high blood pressure if the patient ingests too much tyramine therefore a diet is needed
