If you’ve seen the film "Dredd", you might recall what life looks like in the Megacity, where huge skyscrapers are in fact cities in their own right, seemingly providing their inhabitants with everything they need. The floors are representative of streets and usually, the higher the level, the higher the standard of living. But is this somewhat gloomy vision of the future really so unrealistic? Well, when asked about possible solutions to overpopulation, a lot of futurists agree that unless humanity learns to colonise outer space, the construction of gigantic buildings, containing a whole city, might be the only real way ahead. Studies into the feasibility leave no doubt: we possess the necessary know-how to turn this science-fiction idea into reality. Still, a lot remains unclear about any skyscraper cities of the future, should they come into existence. While most experts agree that such cities will be self-sufficient, independent in terms of power, labour and food supply, the futurists’ visions of life in them range from a dreary one, with slums and acute class divisions, to a seemingly idyllic setting, fully automated and regulated to an almost absurd degree of safety where everyone knows their place. Which of these visions will happen to come true?
Which is stated in the text as a fact, not an opinion? a) Constructing skyscraper cities is more likely than colonising space. b) Life in a skyscraper city will result in a high crime rate. c) The technology available nowadays is sufficient to construct skyscraper cities. d) The skyscraper cities will vary a lot in appearance and organisation.
From the text we learn that skyscraper cities a) may not be the solution to overpopulation b) might create the feeling of containment. c) will not depend on external sources of power and food. d) do not provide different standard of living based on a floor
