When we want to make a prediction, we use the Future Simple.

  • Subject + will /won't+ infinitive + extra information
  • Boats will be electric.
  • Houses will be eco-friendly.
  • People won't go by bus in 30 years.
  • Will + subject + infinitive + extra information?
  • Will people ride bicycles in 50 years?

Predictions

When we want to make a prediction based on evidence we use the structure be going to.

  • Subject + be going to+ infinitive + extra information
  • The sky is cloudy. It is going to rain.
  • Tom is riding too fast. He is going to fall.

Plans

When we want to discuss a plan, we use the structure be going to to talk about fixed/definite plans.

  • Subject + be going to+ infinitive + extra information
  • Sarah is going to go to the party this Friday.
  • My sister is not going to celebrate her birthday this year.
  • When/what/why+ be+ subject + going to + infinitive + extra information?
  • When is Sussan going to meet George?

Arrangements

We can also use the Present Continuous with future value to talk about arrengements.

  • Subject + verb to be+ -ing+ extra information
  • Sarah is meeting Julia at the airport.
  • He's leaving tomorrow.
  • Verb to be + subject + -ing + extra information?
  • Is Linda playing tennis tomorrow?

Time-tabled events

We can use the Present Simple with future value to talk about time-tabled events.

  • The train leaves at 11.00 p.m.
  • His birthday falls on Tusday next year.
