Caste system in India

5 things to remember

the Untouchable

Today "The Untouchable" are an under-caste in India and suffer strong discrimination. They are a big part of the population, live in slums and generally have to clean streets. They are considered as dirty and are forbidden to have contact with any other caste members.

The caste system comes from Hindusim, it is expalined in the holy text: the Vedas.

At first, the caste system explained in the Varnas, described the ideal organization of the society. The distribution of the poeple depended on one's ability.

However, the system shifted onto the Jatis. The people now get their caste through heredity, causing the impossibility to change of caste and blocking the Indian society.

The Consitution of India prohibited the caste system in 1948. However, being an important part of the indian culture, this system is still present today.

handworkers, trader, store keeper, they have the economic role in India

Vaïshya

servants, their role is to serve the other castes in order for them to complete their mission in the society
