NEGATIVE AND TAG QUESTIONS
OPEN QUESTIONS
No confirmation of opinion demanded
We use open questions using an auxiliary verb (like do, have) and inverting the subject and verb.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit
Do you enjoy traveling by plane? Has he been to India before?
We use open questions when we don't know what the answer will be or when we don't expect a particular answer.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit
Lorem ipsum dolor
Are you going on vacation this year? Possible answers: Yes, I am. No I'm not. Well, maybe.
Lorem ipsum dolor
Negative questiosn
We form negative questions using the negative form of the verb.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit
Don't you love traveling? Hasn't Jane been to Thailand?
Lorem ipsum dolor sit
We use negative questions to check information that is probably true. We answer with yes or no. Weren't you on vacation last week? Yes, I was. I went to Cancun.
We also negative questions:
- To show surprise: Don't you love going to the beach?
- To make a suggestion: Don't you need to go now?
- To request something, especially when we expect a negative answer. Can't I have a different room?
TAG QUESTIONS
To form tag question we use the auxiliary of the verb in the main sentence.
When the main verb in the sentence is affirmative the tag question is negative. They flew by plane, didn't they? When the main vern in the sentence is negative, the tag question is affirmative. Mike isn't on vacation, is he?
We use tag questions to ask for information, or to check and confirm information. We are staying in nearby hotel, aren't we?
thanks!
