History
Why is it important?
Magna Carta has symbolic value as a defence against arbitrary and tyrannical rulers, and as a guarantor of individual liberties. It is a milestone in the history of legislation, as it introduced the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law. The Magna Carta also influenced many other constitutional documents around the world, for example the European Convention on Human Rights.
King John collected higher taxes to defend his French possessions
The barrons, the clergy and the townspeople were subjected to abuse of power
They rebelled against him and proposed the Magna Carta
The king signed Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215
