Magna Carta

The Magna Carta is a document that meant to prevent the king from exploiting his power and to grant all free men the right to justice and a fair trial

History

King John collected higher taxes to defend his French possessions

They rebelled against him and proposed the Magna Carta

Magna Carta was issued again in it's final version in 1225

The barrons, the clergy and the townspeople were subjected to abuse of power

The king signed Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215

Why is it important?

Magna Carta has symbolic value as a defence against arbitrary and tyrannical rulers, and as a guarantor of individual liberties. It is a milestone in the history of legislation, as it introduced the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject to the law. The Magna Carta also influenced many other constitutional documents around the world, for example the European Convention on Human Rights.
