LA LA LAND talks about daydream, passion, romantism but also about Hollywood. It’s one of the reasons why it won several prices. Nowadays Hollywood reward movies which talk about Hollywood, and artist’ craft. The movie denounces the end of the original motion picture of Hollywood; old movies with big budget are now has been, all of this because of the rise of vod platform such as Netflix. The Hollywood dream is now only a distant memory of a magic era. Movie such as West side story or Singing in the rain are no more produced.

the movie wass realized in 2016 by the Franco-American producer Chazelle

He studied filmmaking in the visual and environmental studies department at Harvard University. Their he meets his future teammate, Justin Hurwitz, who composed the music of his films, and with whom he shares his passion for jazz and musicals.

Setting

Chazelle wanted Los Angeles to be the principal setting for his movie, he said :

"there is something very poetic about the city I think, about a city that is built by people with these unrealistic dreams and people who kind of just put it all on the line for that."

And in my opinion, he made the right choice because now Los Angeles is seen has a big industrial city, the cliché of America. LA LA LAND is a movie set in the 2010's, in its Chazelle want to bring up the charm forgotten of the city. He chose some strategic places that aren't necessarily very well know but really do fit in the movie’s vibes, he also played with the clothes to give a second life to the magic side of Hollywood.

Mia

Mia is a young woman dreaming to be an actress, she works as a barista in a coffee shop in the Hollywood studios, in front of the famous set of Casa Blanca. She lives in a collocation with homies and other girls trying to get auditions.

Sebastian

While she’s doing her best going to any audition she can find, Sebastian is a pianist in a big restaurant where nobody even cares what he’s playing. One day, he decided to play a jazz song he composed himself, but he gets fired because his boss didn’t give him the permission, he was supposed to stick to the list he had. Sebastian is passionate by jazz and want to keep it alive, because jazz is an undyeable type of music, it’s a type of song which gather people and makes them feel happy even though they had a bad day.

Plot

In this modern cinematographic work, we follow the story of Mia and Sebastian. Both protagonists believe in the American dream. All along the movie we keep to Mia and Sebastian's love story from the beginning to the end. It starts pretty much weirdly by insulting each other in the traffic on LA highway. They end up meeting at a party on the height of LA, this marks the start of a tumultuous love story. their relation is fusional, they are open minded and happy to discover and share each other passion, they show support and respect for each other works. But they are so determined to reach their dream that they must take different path and give up on their relationship. This was the most disturbing element of the movie because their life is so perfect, they give such positive vibes when they are together, they are great accomplice but at least they both succeed and get the dream life they always dreamed of.

My opinion

I think the reason why i really enjoy watching this movie is because I've plural things in common with the director and I can identify myself through the protagonists characters. I'm a fan of jazz music, jazzmen have a talent that should be left behind. I'm nostagic of the old Hollywood's movies as well, the cinema is something that have always atracts me, and musical in particular, I find it more alive and they seems to share more feelings.
