The type of pet a person owns and prefers highly depends on age, income, time availability and personal experience. No particular preference is wrong, but certain things must be taken into account when it comes to choosing a pet.

Maintenance

In terms of keeping your pet healthy, happy and safe some things to note are:

  • For general health, dogs require more grooming, depending on the breed, anything from twice a month to every 3 months.
  • Dogs also require more attention from their owners, more playtime to keep them entertained and avoid stress and diseases.
  • A cats maintenance consist on filing and cutting their nails and for long haired cats occational brushing.

time and space

  • Puppies, especially for medium and large breeds, need training and house breaking.
  • Dogs need bigger spaces to live comfortably and require walks several times a day.
  • Kittens instinctively know how to use a litter box.
  • Most breeds of cats are on average the same size making them an excellent pet for smaller spaces
  • By nature cats are much more independent and often spend more than half the day asleep.

expences

  • Dogs are more expensive to keep. An averange dog will require grooming, training, + inicial equipment: bed, leash, toys, treats, bowls and a collar. plus food.
  • Visits to the vet are usually more expensive for dog owners, and since dogs can be larger in size spaying and neutering is also more expensive.
  • Kittens require only a litter box, bowls and a couple of toys, than can be DIY.
  • Cats can be spayed and neutered and a young age and the price is less than half of what it costs for a dog.

fUNCTIONALITY

  • Dogs are highly trainable and have a desire to please humans by nature so they can be trained to serve many different roles: hunting, herding, sniffing, guarding, rescue and service dogs are most common.
  • Cats are good at keeping pests like mice and rats at bay. But will not follow command and are mostly untrainable.

interactivity

  • Dogs of all shapes and sizes can enjoy being indoors or outdoors. As they require walking which helps an owner excersice and enjoy different games like fetching, pulling and running.
  • Dogs will create strong bonds with their owners and are more prone to interact with others in general.
  • Cats prefer to be indoors and will play with their owners in games that involve stoking and pouncing.
  • As they are very independent, cats will not engange in playtime or other activities if they don't feel like it.

Dogs require more dedication and time to adapt to their environment. Love to play and be with their owners all the time and are highly trainable.

Cats require less time, attention and money for upkeep. They are better suited for busier and younger people looking for a pet thats simple and loving.
