INTRODUCTION

Do the countries that have the most wealth(GDP) produce the most plastic?

Dina, Paula, Mimoun and David

ABSTRACT

Our ocean and the array of species that call it home are succumbing to the poison of plastic. According to the United Nations, at least 800 species worldwide are affected by marine debris, and as much as 80 percent of that litter is plastic. Our investigation wants to know if the richest countries are the ones that pollute the most. According to our results, this appears to be the case. Keywords: pollution, plastic, Gross Domestic product (GDP ), rich, tones.

INTRODUCTION

Our research has focused on goals number 6 and 14 that are about Water and Marine Pollution because we want to relate with our Class Project. We investigate the sea and its waste, especially plastics. We are going to work on finding answers to the following question: Do the countries that have the most wealth (GDP) produce the most plastic? It’s an important question because the pollution in the sea is increasing. In fact, five spots have been created in the sea and in the oceans with millions of plastics wastes. Our group has thought of some hypothesis. For the one hand, we consider that richer countries, because they have money, consume much more than other poorer countries. This waste could be consumed in the form of plastic, which is very probably very polluting. On the other hand, we consider that even if they consume a lot of plastic because they are the richest countries, it is possible that they do a very good job of waste management, so it is not necessarily the richest countries that pollute the most.

METHODOLOGY

The following steps have been followed in carrying out this research: 1.Our research was based on the following websites: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal https://ourworldindata.org/plastic-pollution#which-countries-produce-themost-plastic-waste https://ourworldindata.org/plastic-pollution#what-determines-how-much-plastic-waste-we-produce 2. We will compile the information to be able to answer the question and plot data on different graphs. 3. From these graphs we draw conclusions.

Do the countries that have the most wealth(GDP) produce the most plastic?

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This graph represents how many tons of plastic the richest countries produce. China and the USA, following by Germany and Brazil are the countries that produce the most plastic.

From both graphs it can be seen that the countries that produce the most plastic are also the countries that export the most. And where do they send these plastics? Above all to Asian countries.

This graph represents the richest countries in the world. In other words, with more GDP. As we can see The USA, China, Jan and Germany are the richest countries in the world. Gross domestic product (GDP) is the standard measure of the value added created through the production of goods and services in a country during a certain period.

Finally, this graph shows which countries generate the most plastic waste because they do not manage this plastic waste well. TWe can see that are the same countries.

CONCLUSIONS

After doing our research for three weeks and looking for information on different websites, we were able to compile the necessary information to respond to the challenge we had set ourselves. So, in response to the question: Are the richest countries the ones that pollute the most? We can say that the richest countries are the ones that pollute the most. The results of the graphs have helped us to arrive at the answer to the research. The first HYPOTHESIS we wrote was the one that was true and the second HYPOTHESIS was the false. Plastic pollution is one of the defining challenges of our time. Plastic pollution is the most widespread problem affecting the marine environment. It also threatens ocean health, food safety and quality, human health, coastal tourism, and contributes to climate change.
