TRANSPORTATION

around the world, evolution over time

Walking, the first and oldest means of transportation

Road transport for horses began as early as 1902, but trailers designed to be drawn by motorized vehicles were not manufactured commercially until 1912, and for many decades it remained a short distance option, since there were few vehicles around that could cope with pulling a horse trailer long haul.

These vehicles were first made in Hungary and by the 16th century were in use throughout western Europe. They came to be used in place of the heavier chariots for state processionals and as the general transportation of the upper classes. A horse-drawn carriage in Chicago.

On 21 February 1804, the world's first steam-powered railway journey took place when Trevithick's unnamed steam locomotive hauled a train along the tramway of the Penydarren ironworks, near Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales.

Regular intercity bus services originated with steam-powered buses that were pioneered in England during the 1830s. During the late 1800s, electric trolley buses first burst onto the scene, followed by internal combustion engine buses (motor buses).

The year 1886 is regarded as the birth year of the modern car when German inventor Karl Benz patented his Benz Patent-Motorwagen. Cars became widely available in the early 20th century. One of the first cars accessible to the masses was the 1908 Model T, an American car manufactured by the Ford Motor Company.

On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made four brief flights at Kitty Hawk with their first powered aircraft.
