Short-term memory

Long-term memories are often outside of the conscious mind. This information is largely outside of our awareness but can be called into working memory to be used when needed. Some memories are relatively easy to recall, while others are much harder to access. Types of Long-Term Memory: Explicit memories: Also known as declarative memories, include all of the memories that are available in consciousness. Implicit memories: This type of memory includes procedural memory, which involves memories of body movement and how to use objects in the environment.

Some researchers use the term working memory and distinguish it from short-term memory, though the two overlap. Working memory can be defined as the ability of our brains to keep a limited amount of information available long enough to use it. Working memory helps process thoughts and plans, as well as carries out ideas.

Short-term memory, also known as primary or active memory, is the information we are currently aware of or thinking about. The information found in short-term memory comes from paying attention to sensory memories. Short-term memory is very brief. When short-term memories are not rehearsed or actively maintained, they last mere seconds. Short-term memory is limited. It is commonly suggested that short-term memory can hold seven plus or minus two items.
