Zależność ta wyraża się w ten sposób, że im wyżej tym niższa temperatura, większe opady, większy udział śniegu w stosunku do deszczu w rocznej sumie opadów, krótszy okres wegetacyjny, silniejszy wiatr, płytsze i mniej żyzne gleby, trudniejszy dostęp do wód podziemnych pomimo wysokiej sumy opadów. Spadek temperatury powietrza, a także coraz surowsze warunki zmieniajace się wraz ze wzrostem wysokości powodują, że roślinność porastająca Tatry układa się piętrowo".
