Easter
Let's learn about Easter
Easter traditions
In Poland
On Easter Saturday people in Poland paint Easter eggs and prepare Easter baskets. We usually put Easter eggs, a piece of sausage or ham, salt and pepper, bread, horseradish, a piece of cake and an Easter Lamb made of sugar in the basket. Then we take the basket to church to have it blessed by a priest. On Easter Sunday some people go to church at 6 a.m. to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Then we have the traditional Easter breakfast with the whole family. We eat, exchange wishes and the Easter Bunny sometimes brings gifts for children. The last festive day is Easter Monday, known as Wet Monday. Some people use water toys and even buckets to soak each other with water. The Sunday before Easter is called Palm Sunday. The Friday before Easter is Good Friday.

Easter for the more advanced
Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar. The date of Easter Sunday varies from year to year because it is based on the lunar calendar. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon, on or after 21st March. Easter is the celebration of Jesus's rising from the dead three days after he was executed. Easter Sunday marks Jesus's resurrection. After Jesus was crucified on the Friday, his body was taken down from the cross and buried in a tomb.
Easter for the more advanced
The tomb was guarded by Roman soldiers and an enormous boulder was put over the entrance so that no one could steal the body. On the Sunday, Mary Magdalene, followed later by some of Jesus's disciples, visited the tomb and found out that the boulder had been moved and that Jesus's body had gone. Jesus himself was seen that day by Mary and the disciples, and for forty days afterwards by many people. His followers realised that God had raised Jesus from the dead. Christians call it the Resurrection.
