Have you ever seen non-green leaves? Explain the reasons and discuss why are plants green.

01
Since photosynthetic organisms form the base of every food chain , they are often called primary producers. Examples of photosynthetic organisms are:
02
Photosynthesis converts light energy to chemical energy (through glucose in its bonds). Additionally, plants use the pigment chlorophyll to absorb light energy.
- Plants. - Algae. - Photosynthetic bacteria. - Phytoplankton.
03
It also means that colors look different from one another because they are a result of a different wavelength of light. This is talking about light in general.
04
However when it comes to visible light there are 3 main ranges we look at which are:
05
- Reds.-Greens. - Blues.
When the light strikes an object in this case it's a leaf, there are two options for what happens with the light the object can:
06
So when talking about a leaf and its color we need to take into consideration the reasons for why it appears to be this color:
- Absorb the light.- Reflect the light.
- Leaves can contain high concentrations of anthocyanin pigments. - Leaves with colors like red, yellow, or purple can have chlorophyll that are hidden under the non-green pigments. - Chlorophyll breaks down and green disappears, and the colors red and yellow appear. - During fall, the chlorophyll residue and the pigments mix together and form the colors red and yellow. - The other pigments besides chlorophyll are carotenes and xanthophyll. - The yellow colored leaves are resulted from the lack of chlorophyll because they unmask the yellow carotenoids that were there the whole time. But red comes from a pigment called anthocyanin.
