Tsunamis

And everything you need to know!

By: Julian & Victoria

What is a Tsunami?

A tsunami is a series of big waves caused by earth quakes or undersea volcanic eruptions.

What causes a Tsunami?

When the ocean floor breaks, one side is forced upwards, also known as tectonic uplift. It then suddenly displaces the water and sends a ripple thats starts to move outwards and goes as fast as 900 km/h. As it gets closer to the shore, the front of the wave is slowed down and the water behind it starts to build up and create a tall wall of water up to 30 meters high.
