How Horse Height is Measured

Horses are measured in a unit called hands. One hand is equivalent to 4 inches/0.1016 meters. If you ever hear of a horse being 15.2HH, that means that they are 15 hands and two inches tall. HH or H stands for "hands high" or "hands."

So that means if you measure your horse in inches, divide it by 4. For example, if the horse is 62 inches, the hourse is 15.5HH. Any equine that measures higher than 14.2 HH is considered a horse. A pony is an equine under 14.2 HH.
