Angular motion in Gymnastics
centre of mass, Torque, and Axes of Rotation
Centre of mass
Centre of mass in gymnastics plays a important role , The gymnastics body shapes plays a big role with performnace --when a gymnasts bends back their centre of mass is being lowered makes it easier to stay balanced. For example: if the gymnast is balancing on the bar the centre of gravity is over the base , and when the gravity is outside the gymnast will be unstable , so making the base bigger or the area to help be more stable.
Centre of mass
Centre of mass can be defined to the weight of a object which will act as a single point, centre of mass lies on lines of symmery of objects ,centre of mass can increase stability and balance in sport. Example: Is if a individual stands up they will have a centre of mass and centre of mass change if they raise their arm.
Axes of rotation
Axes of Rotation is the imaginary line that projects through a roation point of a joint , to define axis of rotation would be it is a imaginary line when the body rotates.
Torque
Torque rotation of the body such as rotating your arms and legs . Torque is how much force is acting upon a object which causes it to then rotate ,torque creates biomechanical movements, it creates movement of the bodys levers system such as the bones .
Example is during a artwheel the rotation is around the frontal axis- a somersault is a example of the transverse axis
levers
1st class lever
3rd class lever
2nd class lever
Third class lever is the effort in the middel of the load and fulcrum
First class is the lever which is where the fulcrum is in the middle of the effort .
second class lever is the load between the effort , and the fulcrum.
How levers and Axes of rotation are used in sport
levers are the bodies muscles , bones and joints, which help the body move for example levers increase resistance that can be moved with a force. Axes of rotation the body can make around three axes , and every joint movemnt is made in plane axis which is imaginary line that rotates the body.

changes of centre in mass
Gymnatiscs requires a lot of balance and strenght keeping balance is important in gymanasts to keep centre of mass.
keeping centre of mass in right position is important to maintain a stationary for when the body is in a horizontal position
within this video the gymanst is perfoming many moves which he msut keep his body position horizontal, for example his body is like a pendulum and to be stable his cenre of mass needs to lie directly underneath the point at which when he swings .
within gymanstics their is a move called giant which is used to help produce more rotational speed, when the gymnastts swings their arms centre of mass is moved and centre of mass is moved in circlar pattern around the bar, a giant is a somersualt with hands on the bar which effect the normal axis of rotataion
How does change in centre mass effect sport performnace
centre of mass is important for gymnasts such as on the bar , to swing higher ,the energy will be used as the centre of mass is moved , for example when the gymnast moves up, they will then bend their legs this helps to move centre of mass further towards the centre of rotataion
change in centre of mass effects performance , If a unbalanced force is applied to centre of mass, it will accelerate For example : a sprinter, when starting a sprint start, the sprinter must accelerate from a stationary position , the effective start of the sprint all depends on the athletes body positioning and centre of gravity, within the set position.

axes of rotation
axes of rotation is used within gymnastics such as rotation of the body is the lateral axis such as in a forward and backwards somersault skill. when a gymnast is completing g a somersault twisting is combinded with the skill and somersualt rotation will invlove twist rotation.

levers and centre of mass
Levers have three componens knwon as the fulcrum, load and effort.when the bodymoves the fulcrum moves the joints , the load is what is being moved and the effort is the force applied. The head is a example of first class lever becuase the neck muscles helps with effor to move (load) aroun the spine (fulcrum).
planes of movement
saggital plane
saggital plane is what divied the body from the top to bottom
Transverse plane
The transverse plane is known as the horizontal plane, the imaginary line divides body to superior and inferoir.
Frontal plane
the frontal plane is from the sides of the body , it is what divied body from front to back .
vertical axis
The vertical axis runs from the top to the bottom of the body through the centre , example : gymnast performs a spin they rotate around the vertical axis
Levers and change in centre of mass
The centre of mass witin the body determines the bodies stability such as if the gravity falls out of base then the balnace is affected . When gymnasts make a turn the whole body acts as a lever , to help the force of gravity help to turn. The bodies head is the most heaviest part of the body so if the body leans to the right he centre of gravity is not directly obove the bodies midpoint , and more torque is craeted casuing the gymnast to be unstable.
The body applies forces (strenght) and hold objects or move a force. There is three levers for example third lever is the arm and the biceps will pull on the arm between the joint and the ball.
The foot acts as a lever arm for the calf muscle supplying a upwards effort , the body weight is the load and the ball of foot is the fulcrum
effects on Gymnastics performance
Axes of rotation
centre of mass
Rotation of axis helps to move the bodys limbs , arms and legs
Centre of mas effects the gymnasts balance
when the gymnast performs on rings their centre of mass must be still and lie direct under the pivot pointt
when gymnasts rotate their bodies , rotation occurs and is needed to turn the body
VS
If gymnasts do not have their centre of masss under pivot point then it causes the gymast to be unstable
rotation occurs in a handstand with a full turn , the rotation is in the straight jump with the full turn.
Centre of mass helps to is what keeps the body balanced
individual skills have different rotation directions , with a straigt body the distrubition of masss is furthest from the trasnsverse axis
