Introduction

Roberto Polo was born in Havana, Cuba, on August 20, 1951; he is a historian, collector and art theorist, philanthropist and plastic artist. At the age of fourteen he was recognized as an "art prodigy" by the state of Virginia and obtained numerous scholarships on his own merits. The Roberto Polo Collection, whose headquarters in the city of Cuenca was inaugurated in December 2020, is located in the old church of the Holy Cross, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2002. Preceded by a pictorial note from the 19th century, the epicenter of the museum reveals the origins of design at the beginning of the 20th century, based on the concept of "total work of art". The tour culminates with an international contemporary representation and a room dedicated to abstraction in homage to the city that welcomes it.

Navigate in 360º

Browse freely through the Church of the Holy Cross, a modest one-nave construction, made of masonry and with a wooden roof, renovated in the middle of the 16th century by Juanes de Mendizábal, although the great impulse was received in 1568, when Bishop Fresneda commissioned a remodeling of Francisco de Goycoa, the city's prestigious architect. When he died, the architect Pedro de la Vaca made important modifications, such as making the nave wider.
