Introduction
Let's learn more about our field crops. The first thing to know when learning about field crops is to know how to group (or classify) plants. Most crops are classfied in the following way. 1. How they are used:i. Forage - The leaves and stems are used as animal feeds. ii. Root - The enlarged roots of these crops are eaten by humans or animals iii. Grain - Seeds from the plants are eaten by human and animals.
2. Plant familiesi Grasses ii. Legumes

Grasses
The leaves have veins that run parallel to each other. the leaves are also made up of two parts: a sheth that envelops the stem, and a blade. Their roots are fibrous. Grass pastures can supply good yields of quality feed, and the wide selection of grass species means that there is a grass to suit almost any growing condition or management need.

Legumes
Plants have branched stems. Their leaves come out in a bunch, or are compound. The veins on the leaves look like a net. They have one long main root called a tap root. There are nodules in the roots where bacteria fix or take in nitrogen from the air. Legumes are plants with flowers like the sweet pea and produce their seeds in pods. Compared to grasses that have long slender leaves, legumes have compound leaves with three or more broad, rounded leaflets.
