La Donazione di Costantino è un documento firmato dallo stesso imperatore nel 314 a.C. e costituito da una falsa ordinanza manifestante: 1. il primato del vescovo di Roma sulle chiese patriarcali orientali; 2. la sovranità del pontefice su tutti i sacerdoti; 3. la sovranità della Basilica del Laterano; 4. la superiorità del potere del papato su quello imperiale. Il tutto dovrebbe: 1. essere rivolto a papa Silvestro I; 2. giustificare il potere temporaneo dato alla Chiesa
