LAS FALLAS
VALENCIA
Las Fallas comes from a centuries-old Valencian tradition in which the city’s carpenters would burn old materials they didn’t need on the day before the day of St. Joseph (March 19), the patron saint of carpenters. These enormous cardboard, wooden, polyurethane, cork, plaster and papier-maché figures called "ninots" usually depict satirical scenes and current events.

RETURN
On the last Sunday from February, from the ancient Torres de Serranos, the Fallera Mayor (the Queen of the Fallas), chosen from all the falleras of the city, issues the Crida: a call to her people and to everyone to come and join in the festivities. It is the beginning of an unforgettable experience: the Fallas. “Valencians i valencianes, falleres i fallers, gent de tot lo món, la nostra ciutat obri les portes per donar la benvinguda a les FALLES”
LA CRIDA
RETURN
It's a pyrotechnic show in which thousands of kilos of gunpowder are lit varying in frequency, rhythm and intensity. The important thing in this act of short duration (between 5 and 7 min) is the thunderous sound reaching over 130 decibels. The word comes from masclets, a type of firecrackers with a very loud sound capacity. They can include colour and sometimes music. It takes place every day at 2pm in Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
LA MASCLETÀ
return
It's the name given to the act of assembling and raising the effigy/statue of the falla. The monuments will be displayed in the streets On the day of the 15th all the monuments that are set up in Valencia must be fully finished. That is the day that the judges award the best ones and choose the ninot induldat, the only figure to be saved from the burning.
LA PLANTÀ
return
A beautiful ceremony that honours the Virgen of the Helpless the patron saint of the city takes palce on March 17th and 18th. Falleros and falleras dressed in typical traditional costumes will take bouquets of flowers that become part of an impressive 15-metre high structure representing the Virgen’s cape.
L'OFRENA
return
On the nights of the 15, 16 and 17 there are firework displays in the old riverbed in València. The last one is held on 18th and is called La Nit del Foc (the Night of Fire) a 20 minutes unique firework display .
LA NIT DEL FOC
return
This act is the most significant of all and with which the festivities end. It is hold the late night/early hours of the morning of the 19th, when all the beautiful monuments, small and large, must be burned on the 19th. Traditionally, the falla in the Plaça de l'Ajuntament is burned last.
LA CREMÀ
Stalls serving traditional foods fill the streets. A very Valencian custom is the "almorzaret" which consists of meeting friends for a mid-morning snack at 10:30 or 11:00 AM.
A treat specific to the festival is bunelos de calabaza or pumpkin fritters, accompanied with rich hot chocolate. These are deep-fried treats, doughnut-like with a round shape and a hole in the middle.
