- The current coverage may be low, but it still has a negative impact on biodiversity and other planetary boundaries.
- Global population has more than doubled over the last 50 years. To meet the demands of a rapidly growing population on a planet with finite land resources, reducing our per capita land footprint is essential.

- Land system change is the result of human activities related to the use of land.
- Forests, grasslands, wetlands and other vegetation types have primarily been converted to agricultural land.
- Global cropland coverage is used to indicate the impact of this change.
