SMALL TALK IS...
- polite conversation about unimportant or uncontroversial topics, especially engaged in social situations
- often between people who don't know each other well
- great to break the ice with someone, or even avoid awkward silence
IMPORTANT SKILLS TO BE GOOD AT SMALL TALK
- Be a social person
- Be a good listener
- Be able to encourage the other person to talk
- Ask questions and follow-up questions
- Use body language to show interest in the conversation
- Keep a balance between being a listener and a speaker
