hIP-hOP OR SHAKESPEARE ?

Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was a renowned English poet, playwright, and actor born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon and died in 1616.

Rivals

Shakespeare most famous rival was another poet named Marlowe. Christopher Marlowe was a 16th century British poet and playwright, known for writing plays such as Doctor Faustus, The Jew of Malta and Edward II.

The globe

The rich paid three pennies to sit in the higher galleries, which had a better view. The best seats were in the lords' rooms, private galleries closest to the stage.

Queen Elizabeth I

Shakespeare mainly wrote under Queen Elizabeth I who reigned over England from 1533 to 1603. He also wrote at the time of James I (1603 - 1625) .

Lower Class

The lower middle class paid a penny for admittance to the yard (like the yard outside a school building), where they stood on the ground, with the stage more or less at eye level—these spectators were called groundlings.
