Alp Er Tunga

Alp Er Tunga or Alp Er Tonğa (Alp "brave, hero, conqueror, warrior", Er "man, male, soldier, Tom", Tonğa "Siberian tiger”) is a mythical hero who was mentioned in Mahmud al-Kashgari's Dīwān Lughāt al-Turk, Yusuf Balasaguni's Kutadgu Bilig and in the Vatican manuscript of Oghuznama by an unknown writer. In Turkic literature he is considered to be the same character as Afrasiab in the Persian Epic Shahnameh. He is sometimes mentioned as a khan of Saka (Scythia). The Karakhanids claimed to have descended from Alper Tonga.

Name and Historical Location

Alpar Tunga Han is depicted with two tunga (leopards) next to it, with a coat on its back, the teeth of the hide visible above its head. It is recognized by most of the Iranian and Middle Eastern peoples as well as in the whole Turkic World. It is counted as one of the 33 ancestors of the Seljuks. He lives in an underground iron palace with 100 columns. He is known as Alpar (Alper). It is called Afrasyab in Iranian mythology.

The word Tunga is actually the name of a predator of the leopard genus. As a symbol of valor, the alps are called names. Alpines grow hair, as long hair reminds Tunga. In addition, warriors wear the coats of predators, especially animals such as lions, tigers, leopards, and tunga. These skins are the symbol of warfare

It is claimed that Alp Er Tunga, whose life is based on legends, is a descendant of the ancient ancestors of Turks by Turanians. In addition, in Divân-ı Lügati't-Türk and Kutadgu Bilig [6], it is stated that he is the same person as Efrasiyab (Afrasyab), one of the heroes of the Iranian epic Şehnâme.

According to Şehname, during the Iran-Turan wars, Zaloğlu was ambushed and killed during his fight with Rüstem. It is said that Alp Er Tunga Sagusu about his murder is given as a sample text in various parts of Divân-ı Lügati't-Türk.
