Psychology & Culture
Culture affects your personality
Differences in our culture makes differences in our own personality. Alarge part of who we are and the decisions that we make are influenced by the culture we grew up in. In this presentation we'll explain 2 spectrums to define cultures.
Individualistic culture
This kind of society focuses on individualism, people living in this kind of society prioritise themselves, they care about their own needs and improvement before the rest of the team. In this society they teach and believe that if everyone takes care of themselves and does their part then the group can be self-sufficient. People in this culture are independent and self-sufficient but struggle when working in teams. They also distance themselves psychologically and emocional from others since they are not used to working in teams.
Collectivist Culture
In this type of culture people are taught to focus on the needs of the group before they focus on their own individual needs, they emphasise the needs and goals of the group as a whole over the needs and desires of each individual. They associate their identity to the role and function in a larger group. Collectivist societies teach people that everyone will benefit when they start to look out for one another. Members of collectivist cultures tend to be extremely close to each other psychologically.
Uncertainly avoidance culture
Relates to the degree to which individuals of a specific society are comfortable with uncertainty and the unknown. Countries displaying strong uncertainty avoidance index believe and behave in a strict manner. Individuals belonging to those countries also avoid unconventional ways of thinking and behaving. These kind of societies generally score high in neuroticism, these societies have a more formal system of rules that try to minimize cultural or a situation ambiguity and the citizens are uninterested in change.
Approach culture
On the contrary the approach culture societies have fewer laws and regulations, the citizens are more interested in politics. These cultures are more open to change and more tolerant of diversity. Families in this culture tempt to have less gender roles and and their schools have a more open-minded learning
Cross-cultural management
The next video talked about how you could use your knowledge on intercultural relations to be more productive on a task with someone from a different culture than yours. They gave us three steps to achieving this. First step was recognition, then respect, and lastly reconciliation. On recognition we can talk about thinking what our differences are and how that makes us or them feel, the second step would be to maintain a respect for them even though we are not used to their methods, lastly we can think of the succes they achieved by using their methods, and learning from them.
