Definitions

Orography

Hydrography

It's the study of the topographic relief of mountains. it can more broadly include hills, and any part of a region's elevated terrain.

Deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, It also includes the prediction of their change over time

Mexican Orography and hydrography

Is influenced by tectonic plates

Mexico rides on top of the North American Plate. To the Southwesr, it collides with the Cocos Plate, and to the Southeast with the Caribbean Plate. The constant movement of these three plates are what modifies our country's relief.

Mexico's relief or terrain

The most important mountanous systems

They are formed by the movement of the tectonic plates. Mexico's dominant geographic feature is the great highland central plateau, which occupies most of the width of the country, extending from the US border to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

Mexico's relief or terrain

The most important mountanous systems

The plateau is enclosed by two high mountain chains: Sierra Madre Oriental on the east and Sierra Madre Occidental on the west. Of the volcanic peaks, Pico de Orizaba or Citlaltépetl, Popocatépetl and Ixtaccíhuatl are the highest

Mexico's hydrography or waterways

The most important bodies of water in the country

The most important river is Rio Grande (or Río Bravo), which extends for about 2,100 km of the boundary with the US. The Papaloapan is an important source of waterpower. Other rivers areÑ Lerma, Santiago, Usumacinta (part of the boundary with Guatemala), Grijalva, Balsas, Pánuco, and the Soto la Marina. The largest lake in Mexico is Lake Chapala

Factors that determine

The formation of natural regions

Relief or terrain: it's the shape of the Earth's crust on the surface, both above and below water. Climate: the set of precipitation, wind, atmospheric pressure and temperature in a region. Hydrography: different bodies of waters like rivers and lakes. Vegetation: flora found in a region
