General information

• This system is dated back even before 1000 B.C.
• Divides Hindus into two groups Varnas

light skin color dark skin color

• Renewed divison into hundreds of Jatis
• Hierarchical order is based on their Karma and Dharma

• The system is potrayed by the god Brahma

The Dalits

• Also called the Untouchables or Paria
• In 1950, the rights of the Dalits were strengthened by the Indian constitution
• Nevertheless, discrimination, economic expliotation, persecution and violence are part of their everyday lives
