Theories of Educational Administration
Transactional/Management Theory
Characteristics
- Focus on the role of supervision, organization and
group performance and the exchanges that take place
between leaders and followers.- These theories base leadership on a system of rewards and punishments.
Collegial Models
Characteristics
- They are strongly normative in orientation. "The advocacy of collegiality is made more on the basis of
prescription than on research-based studies of school practice" (Webb & Vulliamy, 1996, p. 443).
- Collegial models seem to be particularly appropriate for organizations such as schools and colleges that have significant numbers of professional.- Collegial models assume a common set of values held by members of the organization. These common values guide the managerial activities of the organization and are thought to lead to shared educational objectives.
- The size of decision-making groups is an important element in collegial management. They have to be sufficiently small to enable everyone to be heard. - Collegial models assume that decisions are reached by consensus. The belief that there are common values and shared objectives leads to the view that it is both desirable and possible to resolve problems by agreement.
Relationship/Transformational Theory
Characteristics
- Focus on the connections formed between leaders
and followers. -Relationship or transformational Management leaders motivate and inspire people by helping group members see the importance and higher good of the task.
Differences
- Transactional/Management Theory monitors group performance and the exchanges that arise between leaders and followers, making it clear that if expectations are not met there will be a reward or punishment. - The collegial model takes into account all members of the group for decision making, which is done through discussions where consensus is reached, thus allowing teachers to consult and collaborate with others. - Relationship/Transformational Theory focuses on the connections formed between leaders and followers, and also focuses on enabling people to develop their potential.
Analysis
Transactional/Management Theory involves motivating and directing followers, who aim to obey the instructions of their leader, who believes in motivation through a system of rewards and punishments, In other words, on the notion that a leader’s job is to create structures that make it abundantly clear what is expected of followers and the consequences (rewards and punishments) associated with meeting or not meeting expectations. Leaders emphasize detailed, short-term objectives, as well as standard rules and procedures.
The collegial model allows teachers to generate spaces where they can debate, consult and participate in decision making, which is reached by consensus in order to fulfill the common purpose of the group's participants; this model is based on the principle of supportive relationships. One reason to pursue the study and practice of collegiality is that, presumably, something is gained when teachers work together and something is lost when they do not.
The relationship/transformation theory influences change in the follower, motivating them, inspiring them and helping them to see the importance and higher good of the task, focusing on the performance of the group members, but also on each person developing his or her potential. Leaders of this style usually have high ethical and moral standards. Relationship theories are often compared to charismatic leadership theories in which leaders with certain qualities, such as confidence, extroversion, and clearly stated values, are seen as best able to motivate followers (Lamb, 2013).
Reflection
These theories are reliable because they allow the educational manager to organize resources, control the process and make decisions that allow him to improve organizational standards, exercising a role of supervisor, motivator and collaborator, allowing other people to have an opinion in decision-making. in order to improve in the institution.
